Himachal Pradesh Tightens Safety Rules for River Rafting and Kayaking
The Himachal Pradesh High Court is prioritizing safety in adventure sports. They’ve instructed the Kullu district’s Deputy Commissioner to set an upper age limit for participants in activities like kayaking and river rafting.
The court, led by Justice MS Ramachandra Rao and Jyotsna Rewal Dua, also emphasized the need for senior citizens to have a “fitness certificate” before joining these adventures. This comes after a review in November 2023 revealed shortcomings in safety protocols for river rafting and other such activities. The court noted violations of Rule 11(b) of the Himachal Pradesh River Rafting Rules, which mandates that rafting operators have two rescue rafts or a combination of one raft and a kayak.
This ruling follows a tragic accident involving a 65-year-old tourist and aims to strengthen safety measures in river sports. The court will revisit the matter on July 18th, 2024.
