Melbourne’s High Street Crowned the Coolest in the World

Forget the usual tourist traps! Melbourne’s hidden gem, High Street, has been named the coolest street in the world according to Time Out’s global editors.

This inner-city artery, snaking through Thornbury, Northcote, and Preston, boasts a unique blend that caters to all tastes.

“It’s undeniably cool,” says Leah Glynn, Time Out Melbourne’s editor. “Amazing restaurants, hidden bars, live music – everything you’d expect. But it’s the welcoming community vibe that truly sets it apart. People just love hanging out here.”

Easily accessible by tram from downtown, High Street offers something for everyone. Foodies will find charming cafes alongside trendy food trucks. Shopaholics can unearth vintage treasures or browse the latest fashions. Music lovers can catch live gigs or unwind at rooftop bars. There’s even a quirky indie cinema!

Time Out highlights some must-visits: Casa Nata for delectable Portuguese tarts, 1800 Lasagne for its legendary dish, Northside Wines for local vino, Gigi Rooftop for stunning city views with your drinks, and Francesca’s Bar for dancing the night away.

This is a big win for Melbourne, which has dominated Time Out’s “coolest street” list for three years running. Smith Street took the top spot in 2021, followed by Gertrude Street in 2022.

High Street isn’t the only international gem on the list. Hong Kong’s historic Hollywood Road, a vibrant mix of landmarks, trendy bars, and hidden speakeasys (like the toilet-themed Tate Dining Room!), nabs the second-place position.

Austin’s East Eleventh, known for its sizzling barbeque at Franklin Barbeque, live music at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard, and the eclectic Vintage Bookstore and Wine Bar, is the sole US representative in the Top 10, claiming the third spot.

Rounding out the list are amazing streets from Buenos Aires, Vancouver, Kuala Lumpur, Lisbon, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, and Barcelona.
